Magnetic Poetry - It All Started With A Sneeze

It all started with a song and a sneeze. Dave Kapell, founder of Magnetic Poetry, was suffering from writer's block while trying to compose song lyrics. To overcome this problem, he wrote down interesting words on pieces of paper and rearranged them, looking for inspiration. What he hadn't figured into this experiment was his allergies. One good sneeze and any progress was sent flying across the room. Dave decided to glue the words to pieces of magnets and stick them to a pizza tin. Then he got hungry and the now magnetized words made their way to the refrigerator door. Before too long, Dave wasn't the only one rearranging his would-be song lyrics. When friends came over, Dave noticed they started to move the magnets around, amusing themselves by writing the first magnetic poems.

After seeing his friends having fun, Dave thought he might be able to sell his word kits at a local craft fair. He made up 100 kits and set up shop at Calhoun Square, a mall in the Uptown area of Minneapolis. All 100 kits were gone after 3 hours. That night, he recruited as many friends as pizza and beer could draw and made up more kits--all of which sold as rapidly the next day.

From these beginnings, Magnetic Poetry® has now sold over three million word kits, over one billion word tiles--growing from the Original Kit to a kid's line of kits, to foreign language kits, to Voice/theme kits.

And since March 2008 Magnetic Poetry has been a part of Tuesdays and Thursdays - Making Ordinary Days (and refrigerators) Extraordinary

Making Ordinary Getways Extraordinary : Virgin Atlantic

Making Ordinary Days Smashingly Extraordinary
Sometimes the best way to make an ordinary day extraodinary requires getting away from it all. Our favourite places to get away usually can be reached on Virgin Atlantic

A caffeinated boost to make ordinary gardens extraordinary

One of the more brilliant things done by Starbucks, and not known by many people, is the "Grounds For Your Garden" program. In virtually every company owned Starbucks across the US Starbucks saves the used grounds for gardeners. Rose afficianados know well how spreading coffee grounds as a top dressing on the flower beds produce the most brilliant blooms, but virtually every other plant in the garden benefits as well. The grounds are always bagged up - reusing those bags in which the whole beans are shipped to the stores - so getting them home is easy.

Besides using the grounds as a top dressing for blooming plants, grounds have also been scattered around the base of foundation plants. On occassion, when there is a bit too much carbon based items in the compost (primarily all those dried leaves in Autumn) an addition of nitogen rich coffee grounds sets the compost back into balance. Aside from the benefit to my garden, the program also keeps millions of pounds of waste out of landfills.

Sometimes its little things like this that can make ordinary days, and ordinary gardens, into extraordinary ones!

Great Quotes Worth Sharing : Wisdom From Jame Michener

“The main purpose of life is: To have a job in whose purpose you can believe; To have friends whose immediate purposes you can trust; To have some spot on earth to which you can return as home; To be at the same time a citizen of a larger world.”

A Lesson From Robert F Kennedy

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert Kennedy

- - - - - - -

Children know this. Children live this. So why do we as adults forget this important lesson?

Daring to fail greatly starts in infancy: pushing our bodies to roll over, to see our world from a different vantage point that WE decide. Of course later on there is walking. Boom! Fall down. Get up and do it again, know that a fall could happen again. Babies, and even the adults around them do not see the falls as failures, they all seem to know that it is a part of the process of learning to walk. So why is it that we as adults are so afraid of the stumble in our lives?

Are we afraid of failure, or is our fear more deeply rooted in the words and reactions of others who may see us on that journey? Does the reaction of others, or our perception of the reaction of others really matter? In that vein does failure even matter, perhaps failure is a perception as well. Thomas Edison referred to all the attempts at creating a lightbulb '1000 way of how not to make a light bulb.' Of coure there are all those lab workers who crash cars into walls, looking for failure points, all in the name of learning how to make a safer automobile.

Perhaps the biggest misnomer of failure is its absoluteness. The Kennedy family has had more than its share of triumph and tragedy, but every member of the family picked themselves up, often multiple times in their lives, and worked to complete the tasks at hand. Failure doesn't have to be final, it can be a speedbump on our journey, a chance to slow down and really examine all that is around us, then continue on the journey, toward success.
